In this issue, we celebrate both the past and the future: 25 years have passed since the first promotion of the Multimedia Degree at the UOC, a pioneering commitment to interdisciplinary and digital training that has successfully adapted to and anticipated significant technological transformations. In his article, Javier Melenchón recounts this journey with a gaze that combines reflection, vision, and commitment. From the days when sending video over the network was unthinkable to the present marked by generative artificial intelligence, multimedia has proven to be a fertile field for experimentation, pedagogical innovation and knowledge creation.
Precisely, artificial intelligence (AI) is a central theme in the other two articles of this issue, reaffirming its crucial role in modern cultural shifts. Artist Dasha Ilina invites us to observe, with a critical and humorous perspective, how algorithmic video surveillance systems blend with the most everyday urban infrastructures: the street lights of Paris. Through a layering of public space and YouTuber aesthetics, Ilina deconstructs the control mechanisms and productivity logic that pervade even the most mundane parts of our connected lives.
Oliver Bown offers a broad and compelling reflection on how artificial intelligence impacts cultural industries. He highlights three key transformations: the agency of AI systems, the increasing platformization of creative expression, and the extensive extraction of cultural history. He warns us that the cultural map could become a territory dominated by corporate actors who not only anticipate but also shape cultural development.
Amidst this mix of anniversary celebration, critical questions, and tech fiction, Mosaic reaffirms its commitment to a digital present. We celebrate 25 years of multimedia, recognizing its fundamental strength and looking ahead, understanding that technology will continue to reshape our capacity to imagine, create and resist.
